Getting Started...

How do you start using our services after ordering? Well, it may seem quite daunting at first, especially with all the options you have available, so here is our helper page to try and assist you with "getting started".

Definition of terms

Ticket and Submitting a ticket

We use the term "ticket" in reference to our support portal system, both located at http://support.burtonhosting.com and within your member area. When you submit a "ticket", this opens an "online call" to one of our departments, who will try and assist you with your query. Emails sent to support, billing etc are sent through to the ticket system, and a call is opened. We recommend all tickets are submitted through your member area so that you may reference past tickets at a later date.

After a response has been placed by a member of staff at BH, the ticket is placed on status "hold". You may reply back at any point. If you do not reply back after 72 hours, the call is automatically closed. You may of course re-open this call at any point should you need to.

cPanel and accessing your cPanel

You can control all aspects of your sites' services via your "cPanel". cPanel is both an acronym for "Control Panel" and a market leader brand in hosting software. You can logon to your cpanel via http://www.yourdomain.tld/cpanel e.g. http://myexcellentdomain.com/cpanel

FTP and uploading files

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol". You may use an FTP client such as "SmartFTP" to upload files to your webspace. Another method is using the "File Manager" located within your cpanel. This is a web interface tool for beginners, but is very limited in it's features.

What exactly is my "Member Area"

Your member area is your Billing Area. You can login at the link provided in your welcome email. You use your email address and password to log into your member area. Your member area is a portal to the ticket system, as well as providing access to your invoices and account renewal dates etc.

Where do I start building a website

We're unable to give any free help here, but recommend using a tool such as Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver. You may also wish to contact us for pricing on webpage/site design.

If you feel any further information would be beneficial in this "getting started" guide, then please do contact us and we will add further articles.
